Comparing to graphical MMORPGs Imperian closely resembles korean MMORPG. "Free to play" (aka ridiculously expensive, but you can grind about 65000 years and get everything for "free"), pointless grinding with level of mind-numbing effort increasing in geometric progression and non-consensual PVP based mostly on how much real cash invested in character.
That said, Imperian has huge detailed world with good descriptions, very nice mapping/path finding system and professional administration.
I highly recommend Imperian if you are seeking the game where you can defeat everything and everybody with your credit card, but otherwise wouldn't bother.

This game is the best of the IRE series of games. I have found more intricate things to involve a character in than any of the other games. The volunteers are awesome, the producer is dedicated and sensitive on various issues. I have played Imperian in various capacities since it began, and I wouldn't want to spend time or money on any other game out there. Imperian has given me more entertainment in the past five years than any game I've ever played.

I've been mudding since 2001 as well, I also started off in achaea. I lost my interest in achaea as soon as Imperian came out, it was so different and unique! It's a place where you can be creative, you have a chance at owning a shop/house and becoming a leader of a guild. I personally enjoy the creative freedom I have with the various trade skills, I earn a nice wage from my shop and enjoy the role-playing environment.

The admin really do seem to care with Imperian, I like that the Gods are invisible to the mortals most of the time which is the way that Gods should be IMO. Thanks Imp!

The only mud I've played in about 5 years. I don't see myself leaving for any reason, any time.

I've been MUDding since 2001, and was originally addicted to Achaea, looking into Imperian at opening before losing interest for my time and effort spent in IRE's first MUD. When I came back to Imperian a year or so after its initial opening, I found a world of fantastic lore, and administration who care, despite the few nay-sayers who are never satisfied's claims.

I've been playing on a MUD for eight years at this point and Imperian is the game that will always remain with me.

Player politics in cities and guilds, the exploration, questing and just general day-to-day roleplay that occurs kept bringing me back so that I was always playing a game that I enjoyed.

Definitely give it a go.

Imperian was my first mud, and is still the only mud I am actively playing. I love it! I love the roleplay, combat, and in depth experience it provides, not to mention the amount of interesting people and friends I've met over the years. Definitely worth getting into and experimenting!!
