The 116 colonists of Roanoke fled to Croatan Island off the coast of North Carolina in the year 1589, while their governor, John White, was in England. White returned on a trade vessel to Croatan Island in 1590, setting ashore mere hours after the passage of a particularly violent storm. Upon reaching the recently founded fortified village, White discovered all the colonists were gone. Three letters were carved into the trunk of a tree near the center of the village: "KAM."

For generations on Earth, the fate of those lost colonists has remained unknown.

Now, in the 27th Century, aboard the sentient starship Comorro, the truth is revealed: A Kamir-caused rift in space-time swallowed the Croatoan Island inhabitants and brought them forward to Hiverspace in the year 2650.

How will the pre-United States settlers cope with life in a farflung future of high technology and exotic aliens?
