It is very difficult to get something like this project (mudgamers.com) started, so I am hoping to get the discussions flowing with some info about myself. Please, feel free to reply with your own info or feel free to make fun of mine…
Fire:
I started MUD'n in 1998 on an old Compaq with a 4 gig HD and a 24k modem. The town I lived in has a rather large University and the RPG community is still very strong there. I was introduced to the game (an old TinyMUD) by a co-worker whose brother was attending another college a few states away. At the time, there were no real ways to chat between computers, and MUDs were the social gathering site for pretty much every college student around.
I remember the game used to crash once every 12 hours or so. It got to the point that we could tell the game was about to crash and everyone would try and save as fast as possible. If we started to lag (happened a LOT back then), we'd gossip "LAG". Three of those from different folks would more than likely signal a coming crash. We had to manually save or risk losing our items. Strangely enough, though: the crashes always seemed to record your points, like if you just got beat up badly, but wouldn't record the last few items you picked up, unless you saved first.
Even though there were about 20 to 30 "core" members, the admin decided to take the game down one week, with little warning. The idea, we found out much later, was to bring in a SMAUG core and add the areas to that. Most of the builders were working hard on the rebuild, since they discovered they had to do everything by hand, and within a few weeks the whole project collapsed.
I went through several game personas over the years since, before finally settling on "Fire" (member on TMC since Feb 29, 2000) and have pretty much stuck with that since. I also go by "Snark", "Snarky" and "Snarksneeze" on various other sites and several MUDs, mostly because "Fire" is often taken or used by an NPC.
I am currently developing my own custom code base at this time. Truth to tell, I started it way back in 2001, though it has gone through quite a bit of changes since the first socket code was written. You can visit my site at: http://www.dynamud.com but there isn't much to do there and I have not really added a link to the game since I have a few character creation issues to work out.
Feel free to add me as a buddy and PM me as well!
